But thanks for that info Scotchie, I note with disappointment that Woolworths in Dover is not amongst them, The financial returns from the Dover store must have left something to be desired I guess. So good news for some but not for us here in Dover.

20:2112455PaulB - I suspect that they have bought Woolies just in places where they dont already have an outlet. The financial returns on an old Woolies outlet would not have any bearing on those of an Iceland frozen food operation, I suspect the coming Asda and Morrisons outlets, along with the Dover demograph, would have counted against us.

09:0312487Ah yes indeed of course you are right BarryW but was wondering if they might like to move more central for a higher profile. i dont know if that Iceland store does any good where it is, as its a bit out of the central area. We really need that Woolworth void to be filled by someone with clout and power.... I wonder if there will be any takers.

09:1812490M & S could move either their food or clothing section in there, so it would give greater space for both and they are not too far apart.

10:1412491PaulB - with the more central position goes significantly higher costs. It is a balance.

10:4812494Paul based on the number of people seen at my end of town with Iceland bags bulging with stuff I suspect is does more than ok

14:5512504My own , very personal view is that they should go to Woolworths & we should pull down that monsterous block along with the Charlton Centre. Wonderful sites for quality town housing schemes. Concentrate Dover's Shopping Centre between De Bradelei[new port scheme ] & Ladywell. Give the retailers that want to get out opportunities to move on & allow central Dover to develop along with out of town housing.
Ah! I've said it no doubt attacks will come.

15:3612507Agreed, PW, but could we also demolish the replica gas works building called the Dover Discovery Centre. A hideous building doomed to failure from the day the first brick was laid.

15:4412508Dave , the building follows the contours of Roman archaeology, not by choice but requirement. This was supposed to be Dover's shopping centre but failed [repeatedly] because of the expense of archaeology.

15:5012509PWs suggestion sounds good - is there any mileage in it? There are some ghastly buildings around Dover, which is a shame as most of the buildings are attractive and are a little spoiled by the hideous ones! I n fact the Woolies building has to be one of the worst, but that can't be helped I suppose.....

16:3112511Certainly the Charlton Centre and the block that Iceland are in, are some of the least aesthetically pleasing buildings in Dover, replacing them with something more in keeping with or at least sympathetic to the other buildings around them would improve that part of town. I do however, think that on the High Street you need a mix of housing and traditional secondary retail outlets, much as you have now with the hairdressers, restaurants and small independents; many of whom could not afford town centre rents.

21:2512518No attacks from me Watty, I think your idea is brilliant. It would tidy up Dover and as you say, concentrate the shopping area into a smaller space which has to be good in this day and age where people don't like to walk too far. Also when Asda etc are complete it will mean the main shopping area is near to the superstore so people are more likely to visit local shops. To be honest I would shop in Dover more if this became real, but at the moment I don't have time to walk from Market Square to London Road when I'm shopping.
Yes I think it's a great idea - bring it on I say
