  Talking about work on this thread, I'll give two examples: there are hundreds of railings that visibly need painting, as they are going rusty. I used to be a self-employed painter. Railings cost money to have painted, so people usually don't let them have a overhauling (one overcoat every few years) and wait till they go so rusty that to do them up a painter would have to get rid of the rust, apply a few undercoats and a few overcoats, to do the job properly! Cost: most people couldn't afford it, including various public buildibgs!
