The shopkeeper and his family will probably suffer from this experience for a lot longer than any court sentence will dish out to this thieving scumbag.

Jan is correct, regrettably the family will suffer for years to come - I speak from personal
Experience. In October 2001 whilst living in Woodingdean near Brighton I had a PT evening job at the local ' Alldays' - on Sunday 21st October at 1904hrs whilst in the store I was confronted by a young guy in woollen balaclava waving a carving knife around - he held it to my throat and demanded I open the tills - I duly complied and he left shortly afterwards, leaving myself and my young 17 year old assistant in shock - I immediately telephone 999, closed the store grabbed two bottle of brandy from the off-license (1 each) and then phoned the area manager who lived in Eastbourne - he asked why I had closed the store - I explained Scene of Crime - I told him I had taken brandy from stock - all he said was "oh make sure you record it" - the initial Police Response was the East Sussex Police Handler - who told me there was nothing he could do - about 90 minutes later a WPC aged about 14 arrived - I heard nothing else - I was off work for 6 weeks - my young assistant never returned!

It's a small world ........I can remember that incident too Ian, amongst many that happened in the Brighton area over the years.
Alldays was previously known as Ghazals and was owned by George Ghazal and he had two sons one of which had a secondhand car business in Rottingdean......not a family to be messed with I might add.
Unfortunately the perpetrators of these hold ups never seem to get their just deserts and the victims are the ones that tend to suffer for a very long time.
Do nothing and nothing happens.

Thanks Bob, yes indeed one of many such incidents in the area at that time. Strangely enough, in a perverse sort of way I was pleased that know one from the Police Force contacted me - I didn't want to re-live it in court or anywhere else - and the same applied to my young colleague - know one deserves such horror whilst going about their everyday work. I still break-down when I speak of it and my tone falters -such as I now write this, I have every sympathy with anyone who is attacked in that manner - sorry for the ramble!

No need to be sorry Ian a good ramble does one good at times and I have read much longer rubbishy ramblings that were no where near as interesting as yours.
