INSIDE THE TURRET!

  I was in the turret during 2006 and these are just a few of the images I made, hope you find them of interest. The guns are huge, I stand 6ft 2, so the shot of me between them will give an idea. The guns were mounted in 1882, they are 16inch, rifled muzzle loading of 100 tons weight each. FOr more details try and find 'THE DOVER TURRET' by Dave Burridge.

  Thanks for the pics Phil, and Tom's link answers my question that the buldings were demolished in 1958. I found the plans below on a Russian website.

  It's a pity that so few people in Dover are aware of the turret, it's history and it's guns. It is, I believe, the only steam driven, armoured and fully rotating turret of it's type in the world. I am sure that I am not alone in thinking that it should be restored and opened to the public, at least the gun room should be as I am told that the lower levels are almost beyond saving.

  Sounds a great idea Phil - maybe Richard can work on it after TSS Dover is restored.
