It was almost exactly 40 years ago, in 1970, when the Conservatives last gained the seat of Dover from a Labour MP.
David Ennals was the Labour MP in question who, I admit was a first class MP and he lost by about 2,000 votes to Peter Rees who served us well until 1987 when David Shaw (Conservative) was elected as his replacement..
Peter was a tax lawyer who lived in Sandwich which was then part of the Dover Constituency.
In 2010 the Dover seat was gained from Labour by another tax lawyer, Charlie Elphicke, who when he was selected lived in Sandwich - yards from where Peter Rees lived. As Sandwich is no longer part of Dover Constituency Charlie moved to Deal, of course.
In another 40 years, when we may be fighting to gain the seat back again, we should select perhaps another tax lawyer living in Sandwich....
Consider the demographics and how Dover has changed. In 1970 Sandwich and many of the outlying areas, all strongly Conservative, were part of Dover, without these areas Peter Rees would never have obtained those 2000 extra votes to win. Yet last week Charlie - without Sandwich and its environs, managed to get a majority of over 5,000... Well done Charlie.
Who do we trust the most lawyers or our mp"s ?
