    Alexander - we have examined with high magnitude the 'letters' at the base of the cross, but they appear, on looking more closely, to be just scratches. I have checked with pictures of runes but nothing can be definitely identified.
    I do agree, it could have been crudely carved and given to a miner to take to work with him, not worn as it is a good 1/2 inch thick and too bulky to wear.
    The pilgrims of course carried crosses, but I don't think they would have been made of this material...
    No, definitely not Anglo-Saxon, as Phil says.
