I couldn`t disagree with barry more strongly that "More votes will 'ebb away' if the Conservatives allow themselves to be painted as extremist."
In fact the opposite would happen as they would capture virtually all of the UKIP vote at a stroke. What on earth is "extremist" about giving our own people a referendum to decide, once and for all, as to whether we wish to be ruled by what amounts to a costly foreign power?
Howard is correct, the majority of the electorate would vote to get out of the EU given the chance. In fact I can`t remember seeing ANY survey on this subject that implied that the majority of people would prefer to retain our existing membership. Although the Guardian may have had one of course!
The latest survey that I can find, something called the Angus Reid online Poll, states that 42% against only 35% of people would vote to pull out. I firmly believe that this trend would be repeated at any given time.
Furthermore, I don`t think that the Conservatives will ever give us a referendum on this matter ( I hope I`m proved wrong ) and there`s more chance of the EU self-imploding than us being taken out politically. Unfortunately, a lot more damage will have been done to our country by the time this would happen.
