I was just reading the latest issue of Dan Dare (written by Garth Ennis, drawn by Gary Erskine and published by Virgin Comics) when I came across a little speech presented by the Prof Peabody as Home Secretary character. The statement was so succinct and well put I thought I would post it here for you all to consider and comment upon.
"God knows we've enough in our history to be ashamed of. But it doesn't matter if you lie about it like the right, or wallow in the guilt of it like the left; eventually you make the past a place that people can't be bothered with. And then the nation's heart rots out, because the good we've done evaporates along with the bad."
Politics, it seems to me, for years, or all too long, has been concerned with right or left instead of right or wrong.

I used to love Dan Dare when I was a kid, it used to be on the olde steam driven radio. Tune in every week.
"Dan Dare, the pilot of the future!"..went the strapline. I was gripped.
I think I belong in the Henry Ford school..you know the one, you can have any model T as long as its black, yes him...he who penned the famous quote
"History is Bunk!"
History is a dodgy thing. Written by the winners of wars who are of course always the good guys(!?). But of course how each country sees their own history differs from the next country viewing the same thing. Ireland's view of its own history for example is very different from England's view of the same thing.
Radovan Karadijc, a loser in the recent Bosnian War, now finds himself in The Hague preparing for his imminent war trial. But if he had won that war, re-united and re-rallied his people, as a president or whathave you, the chances are he wouldnt be there facing trial, yet would still have committed his military misdeeds in order to win that war.
The losers dont write history, the winners write history, mostly as seen by their glossy PR departments at the time.
And the losers don balaclavas and acquire weapons.............

Just remember if you don't learn from history you are doomed to repeat it.

adding to what paul has said, civil wars break out and depending who wins, the superpowers decide whether to
recognise the new government.
the funniest thing i heard recently was when president bush accused russia of invading the territory of a sovereign nation.
he actually kept a straight face too.
