13:4665883In a new Sky News poll.
Voting Intentions
Conservative 42.86%
Labour 23.81%
Liberal Democrat 8.43%
Other 11.33%
Don't know 9.46%
Would not vote 3.60%
Not eligible 0.51%
Sky News Panel results
And this is before the difficult decisions start to bite. Cause for concern - no not at all. The LDs were always a protest party and only got a large proportion of their support because they had no responsibilities of governing. Now the buck has stopped and they are having to come into the real world and they are seeing the truth of their 'soft' support.
Interesting that Labour are not benefitting from the LD left getting on board.
Some may think that the LD's polling collapse will break the coalition. I suspect not - it is more likely to lock them in for 5 years until the benefits of the decisions made now start to show through. I think that the tensions will start to tear the government apart in the fourth year, before the election date.

13:5365886no real surprise with that poll, the yellows have sold out their core support and the reds are without a leader, front bench people or even policies.
i posted on here before about nick's crowd being locked in now for 5 years.
your overall appraisal seems about right barry.
panic will set in with the yellows as the 2015 election gets close.

14:0865894There is a possibility that the LDs could split with some of the 'Orange Bookers' crossing to join the Conservatives.
Interesting range of scenarios ahead....

15:2865903Many thanks for putting that poll up BarryW and as Howard says there...no surprises, but it rams home in black and white the total fall from glory of onetime golden boy Nick Clegg and his cohorts. Clegg's bright light burned like a phospherous flame in the science lab, very bright for a short time and then all too briefly it was gone.
I saw Mr Clegg shrugging this pitiful Poll slump off yesterday when a reporter shoved a microphone at him and asked him about it.
I suspect its right too that this will in a negative way strengthen the resolve of the Coalition as the LibDems will now hang on for dear life...as without the Coalition they are destined for fastrack obscurity at least in the immediate term.
The only one still holding any kind of credibility is Simon Hughes who still seems to be operating as a..well as a Libdem.

16:4965919When the good news about our economic recovery begins to become obvious, as it surely will, this poll will be proven to be meaningless and worthless.
What is the point in even thinking about this stuff so early after the election? The only answer must be that Westminster is quiet while good work is being done mending the country after 13 disasterous years of socialist rule, and the media are desperate (as usual) for anything to bite on.

17:2365930I would not say no work being done, there are daily announcements from Ministers but, yes parliament is closed for recess.

17:2565931I think you will find the government orifices aren't shut because the expense fiddlers are on leave. Didn't I hear that boy Nick was running the show whilst DC was off for a spot of paddling somewhere?

17:2765933At least DC is not sponging off of a dubious Italian or Russian billionaire in the Med or Tuscany, he is in Cornwall with his family for a fortnight.
I think you are getting mixed up between parliaments Sid - the expense fiddlers on all sides are to a larger extent purged. There is greater transparency now with our Charlie leading the way publishing his expenses for us all to see with no 'redaction'....
17 August 2010
17:2965934Barry, is that 'redaction' or 'red action'?

20:0865959I will regret this, but I have been pleasantly surprised by DC et al. A difficult job to do, some slip-ups, but understandable slip-ups and they appear to stem from the will to do the right thing. Blimey - someone slap me..........I may be having a senior moment.......

20:3565962i totally agree with you bern, you are having a senior moment.
i hope that dave has time to reflect over his holiday about making stupid public statements.
he has ministers, unlimited advisers and p.r. persons, let him try to listen to sound advice and not to try too hard to impress people.

22:0465970Howard what is refreshing about DC is that he is not closseting himself away and hiding from exposure. He is making himself available and speaking naturally to people, being himself. Yes that means he makes the odd slip but is that not better than being tucked away and sheltered from the risk of making those errors - he is human and accessible. Good on him.

we will have to agree to differ, i much prefer the considered statement from my betters.
i must add that we are going through difficult times and people like to feel that their leaders are beavering away quietly and not making sound bites.

01:3565979Strange, we've just had 13 years of sound bites aka spin, and no complaints. Why now?
