19:3029988we will be treated to 6 hours of street entertainment courtesy of dover town council in the lead up to the switch on.
this is usually good family fun.
the switch on will be from one "adrian edmonson" co-star of "bottom".
a cynic might suggest he has moved on to rock bottom now.

21:4129996i bet he draws a crowd brian!!
he has the knack of appealing to youngsters, who are the people needed to boost the crowd at the light up

I agree. He is rather an icon for me from his days in the Young Ones.A great coup for Dover. Hopefully a couple of the coffee shops and other stores may seize the opportunity and stay open for a little bit of late night Christmas shopping.

sadly that will not happen, a lot do not stay open for bleriot weekend or the reggatta.
then they claim that dover is dying on it's feet.

This is not a particularly good image as its an extremely blown up part of another picture taken yesterday on my ramblings with the camera..but if you look hard enough you can make out the shape of the new christmas lights. This was just a tiny part of a background..but no doubt we can get a better shot later on.
The chances of any cafe or shop staying open would be very slim...all of them...dickens corner house, la salle verte..all vacate at the mere prospect of a crowd coming.
The night of the screen launch was a case in point...nothing open. deserted miserable place the only exception being the national chain..the KFC ...or the pubs like Wetherspoons, another national chain. The younger ones cant go in the pubs at night.

07:5130006Shame on those cafes and restaurants that don't stay open and then, as you say, bleat about poor trade and Dover fading away! Can we not pressure them a bit beforehand? Surely they can see the effort is worth is, even if it onl;y encourages people to think there are alternative events and activities in Dover other than pubs and benches!!
Come on chaps-who-own-cafes, a bit of effort and committment please!!

I agree. The Salle Verte is often advertising here encouraging us to attend this night or that night of music but when something like the Christmas Lights switch on occurs an important event for kids and adults in the town they can't be bothered. A bit of give and take wouldn't go amiss and may help future attendances at their musical evenings they are always plugging.Speculate to accumulate....

08:0430012I don't know if any cafe or small business owner view the Forum, but I'm happy to ask them if they will stay open.
I'll get the exact details off of the Town Council, then contact the businesses - they could put a notice on their window that they will be open then.

08:1230014Great idea Roger - perhaps we forumites could also mention it when passing the cafes.........?

09:0730020Well done Roger at least are you willing to try! Nights like this should be made the most of and if we are to move forward its all about communicatiion, better than just saying "you will be lucky" and hoping it fails so you can say "told you so"!!

19:0330070Having seen many events over the years cafes and indeed shops never seem interested in staying open Even late night shopping is hopeless.Do the shop owners dress their windows up?im only stating the obvious .If Paul or you Bern can encourage cafes ,shops to stay open all power to your elbow The will is not there .
At least i tell the truth ..
Before you all start slagging me off .I work hard for my community Im at Alkham tomorrow for a coffee morning .Im not a Dover Town Councillor This week you would have seen me on sevral days at Age Concern .
At a meeting on wednesday I supported other councillors in trying to bring forward a better leisure facility .

19:4630081Sue, I will only slag you off if you keep self promoting................................................if you didn't do that we would probably get on famously! That and leave your negativity at the door, please.

21:5630091Lets say some of us have to promote ourselves sometimes as some people think councillors have nothing else to do all day but answer emails .The two email address,s given out by Roger both of these councillors have full time jobs .In the local press you see the same old faces even on this forum but many councillors work in their wards with very little help from the press
Its just the few that some of you know ,Roger ,Jan ,Nigel etc but there are many more who never get a mention ..
