14:1541478In 1996, we opted to get a conservatory put on the back bedroom of the house, as somewhere`s for the children to do their homework undisturbed, or I could have my music on and read etc, or the wife could sit out and enjoy the garden. In other words, a TV/phone free room. We went through the various well known reputable names selling conservatories, but in the end, we got a local Whitfield firm to do it. Pleasant chap, full of this and that, but anyway, a start was made with the digging of the foundations, after which, the builder`s disappeared for some days, and that`s the way it went till it was finished week`s later! (The builder`s told me their boss keeps sending them on another job of a much bigger conservatory somewhere else). Within the first weeks of completion, rain was trickling in, and the boss came round and sorted it, but from then on, it was going on and on in different parts, too longer story to bore you with on here. I`ll give him his due, he came back a number of times, but he must have realised in the end it was a complete bodge up!! We could only use the room when it wasn`t raining, and not use a heater as the heat would disperse through the draught holes. Good job they did the patio door okay, as we could shut that securely. The bossman stopped coming in the end, despite phone calls. Several builder`s tried to sort it, but to no avail. Half dozen windows had blown over the years, due to cheap, very poor quality double glazed unit`s. If that bloke only knew the sleepless night`s we had on deciding what to do about it, and now there were 3 more windows blown, and in need of replacement, as well as water seeping over the door. Just before last Christmas, I decided to go for a new one and hope the builder could demolish the old one. An expensive job maybe? Went on the internet, and the first to appear was Anglia Windows, and I got them here for a quote. Won`t go into detail, but they explained the bodgeups of the old one, as did the fitter`s building the new one. They came Thursday morning, and finished teatime yesterday, demolishing the old, and erecting the new. I can`t describe on here our feeling`s of the old one actually gone, and we`re all sorted. £6,000 in 1996, £6,200 for this one, (including demolishing the old one and taking it away). So, a local business, or a reputable name of long standing when you`re unsure?

21:2841505Sorry Howard, I was looking for my dictionary, I had it the other day while I was reading one of Bern`s posts. No mate, no recompense, I knew after a few years that it probably wanted bulldozing, but during the nice weather, it was great, and therefore justified me in getting a new one. Anglia Windows have done a great job, as I`m sure other respectable companies would have done, including probably Dover Glass, who replaced our faulty blown units and explained the cheap crap units the Whitfield man had done.

21:4741509are they still operating?
if they are theree must be a subtle way of naming and shaming them, without us all being sued.

22:0841513We had local firm Weru do all our windows and doors a few years back. They had to return once or twice to do small adjustments, otherwise, a superb job all round.
One of our neighbours got Anglian to do their windows and were also very happy with the results.

22:2041514Haven`t seen his sign out for a while Howard, but me being me, I would find it hard to mention him on here. He did a conservatory down the road from us, and it was okay, but he done it himself. Other`s besides myself have had one`s, with nothing but trouble. At the end of the day though, he should be checking on the builder`s he employs to ensure the work is up to standard.

02:2341523Colin, I had a conservatory built by a local Whitfield builder many years ago, I have a feeling that he is the same one that built yours. Unlike your experience I have had no problems except for the doors needing a little attention, it must be 18 years old now and have never had a leak.
Like Sid, I had Weru to do all my windows and doors about 20 years ago and never had any problems.

19:0141590Probably Alec, if it was that long ago. I was told he was okay on his own, but had a few cowboy`s working for him, but at the end of the day, it`s all down to him. We had Rainbow windows do all our`s in 1988, and we haven`t had one problem.
