The statue will be added later Paul(s). It will be unveiled on September 3rd by no less a person than Winston Churchill, the new incarnation that is!"

Wow! Thank you for the picture, Paul aka Scotchie. I've been looking forward to seeing how it would appear.
Congratulations indeed to Don Hunter, for this achievement.
I'm thrilled to see the Merchant Navy recognised thus (and will confess a personal interest too, as my dad served with the Atlantic convoys).

My old Polish Dad was full of admiration for the chaps that served with the atlantic convoys.
''They must have been bloody brave or daft'' to quote him. Some praise indeed coming from a Polish Air Force officer...who were all just mad!!!!
I shall remember your dad next time I am on the seafront.

I think therefore I am (not a Tory supporter)

I'm very sorry I won't be able to attend that - our Merchant seamen have much to be respected for.

Invitation I believe Howard, although the public can "be in the area" of course - those who are around the seafront on the 3rd.

I had a look this morning and I understand a statue is to be added.
I am not really sure a statue is needed, There is something understated and dignified in it as it is now and somehow that seems appropriate for these often unsung heroes of the war.
The inscription is very moving...
I had a look today as well, and both my 13 year old daughter and I found the inscription moving and dignified.

Chairman of Dover District Council, Cllr Bernard Butcher, with the Kent Branch of the Merchant Navy Association, is organising a special service for Merchant Navy Day and to unveil the Dover Merchant Navy War Memorial on Dover seafront at 11am on Wednesday 3 September, and all are welcome to attend.
The service begins at 11am at Marine Parade and will include a parade of standard bearers, the unveiling and dedication of the Dover Merchant Navy War Memorial, and a wreath-laying ceremony. There will be an address from the Chairman of the Kent Branch of the Merchant Navy Association, Mr Donald Hunter, and a closing address by the Chairman of Dover District Council.
The Merchant Navy War Memorial was funded by donations to the Dover and District Merchant Navy Memorial Fund in remembrance of the Merchant Navy Seamen who lost their lives in World War II.
