Have read that 3 of our Mayors daughters have won categories in Dover's competition, 2 senior Princesses and May Queen, he was involved as part of the judging panel surely just a little conflict of interest there?

This must be what Reg refers to doesn't suggest Chris was one of the judges.

Not all engagements go to plan and carnival selection nights are no exception. What should have been a busy day, judging and crowning all changed almost from the moment we arrived. Having all been in the court before, as junior princesses and queens (Honor was even Junior Guild Queen for a year), they were looking forward to seeing old friends. Unfortunately it quickly became apparent that there were not enough entrants to fill the court spaces and my girls jumped up and down wanting to enter for the spaces. While I spent a very pleasant afternoon and evening chatting to the visiting courts a panel from as far afield as Hornsey, North London, took over the judging.
It was particularly nice to see the Dover Town Carnival court there, and wish them well for their selection night on 26th March. At the end of the event I got the pleasure of crowning the new courts and, although it was a shame not to see more entrants, it was nice that everyone who entered got a place in the courts and I know that they will all have an enjoyable year ahead of them. Well done to Dover Carnival Association and good to see Dover's two carnival courts supporting each other.

It was in reference to the article in Dover express that said the mayor was asking the questions and the entrants were judged on their answers, failed to mention the lack of entrants though.
I do wonder why these (beauty pageants) are still going on in this day and age.

They're not beauty pageants Reg it is all about personality hence the questions. Loads of girls and some boys lap up the travelling around waving at strangers in different town and having coins thrown at them.

All but in name Howard its the same process as when they where called beauty pageants, i know the youngsters enjoy the whole experience and that is important.
But putting young women and girls on display to the adulation of the masses.
I think it's time they were banned. With the issues that young girls go through over body dismorphia and the rise in anorexia and bulimia in school girls, these type of events only contribute to the problem.

I feel the same and have never understood why anyone would enter unless they want the attention.

I try to be neutral and polite but it is hard and getting even more difficult at times.

I often wonder how much parental pressure comes into play however the main attractions are the singers, musicians and dancers, especially if they come from somewhere exotic are the main reason people go.
