    Metal detectorists also work on the Banks of the Thames, for which you need a special licence.

    You can metal detect on beaches (or at least most of them), but not sure how deep one is allowed to dig, and doubt if extensive digging would be allowed!
    Bona fide detectorists do search local beaches I know.

    Any 'treasure' found on beaches I think has to be reported to the Receiver of Wrecks (more info probably on their website?)
