Jacqui thanks for that there above and I am in total harmony with you. I recognise there is a problem with the OPEN letters page but knowing what to do about it is the thing. That facility went along very well with about 115 pages of letters from the community before the rot set in (there are currently 122 pages).
However I always recognised there could be the potential for problems as being open there are no controls. The noble idea was to give access for anyone who had something to say without the need for the paraphernalia of membership...but twas always a risky concept, judging by past experiences.
I think most would agree that at this stage I have a fair amount of experience and my experience tells me you very very rarely ever get worthwhile contributions from people who insist on being anonymous. Hence the philosophy in this new club where we all more or less know each other.
I have two choices. Either close that section down which seems a shame(option1), or use heavy editorial cuts ie delete widely (option2). We made it to those first 115 pages or so without any deletions whatsoever, but things have changed and the section has been reduced to rubbish and you are right people are avoiding it.
I will begin option 2 next week from monday, and see if that can save it.
Thanks again Jacqui
