The Salutation had what was billed at the time as Dover's first cocktail bar (so my mum tells me - it had cocktail-ish rivals in The Met Bars in New Street and The Shakespeare Bars at The Crypt in Bench Street, of course). I went in there once before it closed, after which it became a very short-lived Pizza Hut. It was a nice pub.
The Prince Regent was notorious, wasn't it? My dad used to warn me when I was a kid that it was the sort of pub where you'd 'go upstairs to collect your change'. I didn't understand what he meant at the time. I do now.
I remember going in The Friend In Need in Peter Street just before it closed, too. Me and my mates were about 18 and were attacked by a huge wolfhound as we walked into the bar. Or it might have been the landlord - the memory's kind of hazy.
Then there was The Arlington, The Mogul, the...well, the list goes on and on and on. How much this town has lost. Truly tragic.
See you in the King Billy for a bottle of Mackeson - chin chin!
