The new parking rules come into effect on Monday - now look out for the fun!
False number plates, number plates too dirty to read, unregistered cars, drivers with no licence ............. just a few things that spring to mind. How on earth can this be policed thoroughly and fairly? Whereas now there can be occasions when a traffic warden will let you off if there's a genuine reason for your misdemeanour, a camera will book you anyway.Surely there will be no facility to dispute a ticket now either? I know illegal parking has to be dealt with but there's really no substitute for a real man/woman doing the job. Cameras again - big brother is watching us yet again.
One question for anyone with legal know how - how will this affect disabled vehicles?

They seem determined to kill off the motorised vehicle as the costs of maintaining same goes ever higher. Swingeing parking charges and no escape is killing off places like central Dover. There should be areas where you can dally, stop and pick up a newspaper, or post a letter and so on but now its not possible. So the cost of the newspaper becomes the cost of parking plus the newspaper. There is something wrong with the core philosophy on all this. Its self defeating in the longer run.
Jacqui yes I think on the parking ticket, as far as I remember, there is a built in opportunity to appeal...but whether it ever works....

Yes appeal can work.My son was unlucky to a parking ticket last year when they clossed the roads for the Burning Of The Boat.He had paid legally returning before the time had expired on his ticket ,without going into too much detail I had to declare an interest and he could not get advice from my fellow councillors so he filled in a lot of paper works, photos the lot.He could have applied for compensation as it took up a lot of his time ,however he decided to just accept the decision. Some of my collegues had Egg on their face.

Jacqui
Surely disabled cars will be unroadworthy...lol...
or did you mean disabled drivers cars?

It's a pity that on Saturdays and Sundays between 8am -10am you can't get a free half hour parking at St James or St Marys / Somerfields by entering your reg number into a special machine that would allow you a free half hour stop and shop ticket. If you overstay you get a penalty and can only be used once per car per day. This would allow you to get your milk ,newspaper bread etc without incurring a 90p fee.
It's not rocket science but it would certainly encourage more people to use the town centre rather than the out of town hypermarkets.Saving on fuel and good for the enviroment.

Welcome to Dover, marvel at our wonderful architecture, the first to really put you in the mood is our wonderful old cinema, please pass it carefully as it is in a state of imminent collapse. Walk into the Market square and see the fountain , we are particularly proud of that. Walk up the High Street it takes a long time to see the fine arrayof charity shops and building societies so allow yourself five minutes. Do stop somewhere for a drink and soak in the local culture like the odd drunk staggering about. Sit outside and sample the wonderful delight of fag ends being flicked everywhere. Take the kids they will love the swearing and the obsenities coming from the local bovver boys. Don't forget to give money to the beggars some of them really need the money to get another fix.
Now tell me your higher parking charges haven't been worth every penny.
Sxx it go to Canterbury.

We did this exercise a little while ago Dave, PaulB even put up photos of some of our dilapidated sites - including the old cinema.
We all (sadly) know what's wrong and many people are working behind the scenes and some things can't be done yet, but are in the pipeline.

The above post accidentally submitted twice.

Marek - you can park anbywhere in the Dover District up to 9am - try that in any of our neighbouring towns - I parked at Whitefriars in Canterbury last week - £1.40 for an hour.
Dave
Nigel please do not draw comparisons between Canterbury and Dover, since the second world war Canterbury City Centre has been developed twice and now has most of the major shopping chains as well as a selection of smaller shops. They have a good selection of pubs offering snacks and light meals, not the sort we have with swearing and fag ends being flicked at you when you sit outside. You have it wrong, we should be paying people to come to Dover not charge them.
I've lived in Dover for forty years and although I feel passionately about the town and its people I haven't seen a great deal of change.

Canterbury is a cathedral town, a university town and a major tourist destination in this part of Kent. There's no comparison between our two towns - obviously things will be more expensive there, including parking.
Can't agree that Dover hasn't changed though Dave, I came here 25 years ago and have seen much change in that time. The main area that springs to mind is Snargate Street and the marinas. When we first arrived my husband was based at the Western docks station (a train driver) and as we didn't own a car in those days he had to walk to work down that way. It was dark, lonely and run down. Look at it now - it's beautiful! Then there's the Charlton Green area - how much better does that look than it used to! Market Square - another place that's been updated - lovely setting now. OK I know there are still a lot of places that need sorting out but I don't think it's fair to say no change has taken place.
I may not be a Dovorian by birth but in my heart I'm one through and through. I love this town and I think all the planned changes are really exciting - always look on the bright side of life!! Smile Dave - you know you want to

It was not me that was drawing comparisons with Canterbury, it was Nigel I was simply replying in the same manner as yourself. I know Charlton Green very well and agree that it has been vastly improved. The Marina is also quite interesting to walk along but Snargate Street itself still looks pretty run down. However this is only just a small part of the town its the rest of it that needs a bit of tlc.
I do smile Jacqui and believe it or not laugh, well at least once per year. I was going to insert a smiley at this point but don't know how to do it.

Dave I'm sure you do - I was only teasing
To insert a smiley just click on the one you want on the right and it will appear in your text - all clever stuff

The comparison I made Dave related to the hours charged - Dover District is 9am to 6pm with only a very few places where charges apply on Sundays.
Shepway, Thanet & Canterbury all charge 12 hours, either 7-7 or 8-8 over a 7/24 period in many places and a couple have night charges too.
Picking up on another point above, Canterbury's main tourist attraction is in the city centre whereas Dover's is on a hill outside and visiting coaches come in from the A2 and back out the same way - we need to link the Castle and other places of interest with the town centre better but it will be very costly.
Back to the main point of this thread - The new arrangements referred to that come into force nationally today result from the Traffic Management Act 2004. Dover currently have no plans to use CCTV for parking enforcement.

the castle and the town should be interlinked somehow.
roger has tried to spread his loyalty scheme there, nothing seems to budge the attitude of
english heritage.
we have promotional material all around the town about our castle, traffic signs and the rest.
what can anyone do to get the heritage people to acknowledge the towns existence>

"what can anyone do to get the heritage people to acknowledge the towns existence"
Unfortunately I think that with 300,000+ visitors a year at the Castle, they don't really need so advertise to the few local people that visit things on their own doorstep.....
Been nice knowing you :)
