20:4740628after seeing yet another closure yesterday(that pound shop next to savers) word has reached me that a new business is starting up tomorrow.
an oriental mini mart at the old health food shop.
we keep hearing that all we have are pound shops and charity outlets, now we have got something really different.
should meet the approval of experimental cooks on here, something to get to wok on(sorry about that).

20:5740629I popped in there yesterday and had a natter with the woman there - it has some great stuff on the shelves, but not a huge amount - but she said that within a couple of weeks it will be much better stocked. the freezer had some nice looking fish, and there were some jars and tins I can usually only get in london. Nice one!! Try it out. She was very warm and friendly too.

22:5140638looks like i am giving out dated info.
colette and barry have already sent down a member of staff to check out the stock just in case the ambassador calls on them unexpectedly.

23:3240642I think it is another shop that is for a specialist sector and will suffer it is such a shame. Being from the north I have seen many a shop, club and pub disappear whilst I have lived here, and its because people don't support it. I think this is another venue that will not be supported because it is so specific in its sales. Sad but true But I do wish the owners all the very best, and I wish them every positive in their venture x x

07:4240648Us too - just because it has some more esoteric stuff doesn't mean mainstreamers can't use it, and it will be a real boon to those of us who use a variety of foods. And she was very welcoming. The variety of stuff is already good but will also be improving.

09:0940656The (local) Manager of the Charlton Centre told me about a few units being opened up and was going to advise me closer to the opening date, but obviously forgot.
It also needs lots more people knowing about it and that can easily be done if people give me their email address.
All the emails I send out are "blind", so no one sees their email address, so they can't receive any spam or scam emails from them.
I'll pop along and see them.

17:5940693I met the proprietor Tess today, a lovely lady with a warm personality, I will be using the store as well. By strange co-incidence I came across some Filipino and Thai recipes last night which would mean a trip to London or trawling the net for those special ingredients, now no problem, only a few minutes away

10:2240750I do not think that it being a shop for "the specialist sector" will affect it. There are plenty of Polish shops opening up in Dover that appear to be doing quite well! The problem may be that the Charlton Centre seems to be the kiss of death for many businesses.

10:2840753Why would there be plenty of polish shops opening up? Is Dover aiming to be the shiniest town on the souoth coast? Surely there can only be a limited market for flogging polish?
Anecdotally, I do remember my dear old departed mother-in-law asking me why, in the middle of an off-license, they were selling polish spirit. You gotta laff sometimes eh?

10:4640761Incidentally, DCAL Mandie comes from Warsaw. I think it is just a tad north west of Birmingham. Fancy being saddled with coming from that place?

01:2940941Hey up Sid,me ol' Dad was born in Warsaw in 1916 but stayed here from '41 onwards until he kicked the bucket. He loved this country, its culture and the warmth and affection shown to him and his other air force mates during and after the war. Many of the families he was billeted with remained close family friends until they sadly passed away. A diferent era I suppose but still happy memories.............
ps.. DCAL Mandie doesn't speak a word of polish..other than kiwi shoe polish
