19:0036399It's the Balmoral, but it's not an unscheduled call, it was due in today anyway. My Dad's going to the States on it when it sails.

19:1336400Oh no, not the Balmoral again - that ship must be cursed. My parents had a blinking rough time on it - twice!

20:0936408It's a round-the-world cruiise - 103 days; I think the first leg, a month, ends in San Francisco.
I was down at the cruise terminal this afternoon and the passengers weren't boarding so I asked why not and was advised that it is a case of Norovirus.
Fred Olsen have a very strong cleaning policy with members of the crew continually cleaning with anti-bacterial sprays, so it is a big shame when this happens - for the company, the crew and passengers.

20:1236410Tis a terrible thing this Noravirus Roger.
Compo and Cleggy used to get it quite a lot.
How long is the ship expected to be in port?

20:1636411Quite right, Roger. It is a round-the-world cruise; my Dad and Stepmother are going on the first leg and get off in San Francisco in early February. I think California in February might just be a bit warmer than here!
In defence of the Balmoral, I have to say that Michelle and I enjoyed a fabulous 12-night Baltic cruise on it in August, and the crew are sooooooo hot on the Norovirus bug; you just cannot move from room to room without having hand gel pumped onto your hands. It takes some getting used to, but worth the effort: if Norovirus spreads, the effect on a cruise ship is massive.

A cruise ship is undergoing a thorough clean and disinfection at Dover today (Tuesday, January 5) after more than 350 passengers and crew were taken ill during a Christmas and New Year cruise.
Fred Olsen's Balmoral was at the port for the start of a 106-night world cruise.
A total of 342 passengers and nine crew were taken ill with the Norovirus, or winter vomiting virus, on board the ship.
"Any outbreak of gastro infection on board our ships is taken very seriously by the company," said Mike Rodwell, managing director of Fred Olsen Cruise Lines.
"As a result the ship is undergoing a thorough cleansing and disinfecting programme before departing on its next cruise.
"Specialist companies have been taken on to work alongside the company's own staff to handle these programmes."
