I'm sure you have all been following the news of the kidnap of the 5 year old in Parkistan, who lived in Oldham.
I'm against paying ransom's to any such kidnappers, I understand it was in the region of £100,000
but if it were your child, would you pay a ransom?

I`ve seen bits about this kidnapped boy Keith, not being mine of course, I can only say in this case that if you pay up, it could start a new thing off, like the ransom`s paid to the Somali pirate`s. I don`t know if the kidnapper(s), would have it in them to kill the boy, as they know they`d have a price on their heads, and it`s money they`re after so they`ll want to live. Its alway`s no for me on ransom`s. I`m not loaded so it wouldn`t be my kids, so I`m unable to answer that part.
Tell them that I came, and no one answered.
Ransom paid but kidnappers trapped and ransom returned. Job done, ransom and kidnappers where they should be.

The point is that HMG didn't pay the ransom, though the family did (and got it back). Obviously this was a personal decision made by the family, or at least the father, which explains why he came back to UK against the wishes of the Pakistani authorities.
As a country it is right that we should not bow down to any such demands from terrorists. As an individual it must be very hard and in this case it all turned out very well indeed.
To answer Keith's original quesion (post #1); I haven't the foggiest how I would react if a member of my family were kidnapped and a ransom demand received, although I guess my initial response would be "How?" as I certainly couldn't raise that sort of money.
