  One of the problems is that local politics always attracts certain members of the 'petite bourgeoisie', who pressed on by their formidable wives in the local Conservative Association, the other butchers, bakers and candlestick makers in their club/lodge/organisation, or fellow luddites in the local branch of their union think that being a councillor will somehow prove their existence in their dreary lot on earth.
  
  It's the equivalent of the local louts spray painting their name around town as they know it's their only chance of being known at all. All a bit sad really.
  
  The councillors instead spray their name and photographs around the local media before returning behind their shop counters to serve us whilst miscounting our change.
