This appeal to historical 'immigration' to support ongoing immigration is both poor history and typical self-justificatory reading-backwards liberal politics.

It couldn't care less 'what happened?' Its question is 'how can we tell a tale that has what's happening now as a happy ending?'.

So it stirs the various ways in which populations got from one place to another (invasion, invitation, slavery) into a liberal gruel called 'immigration'. Celts 'immigrated'. Some more Celts 'immigrated'. Romans 'immigrated'. Angles 'immigrated'. Saxons 'immigrated'. Jutes 'immigrated'. Frisians 'immigrated'. Vikings 'immigrated'. Normans 'immigrated'.

Then this castrated history props up some vague claim that 'immigration put the "great" into our great castle.'

Hey presto, 'immigration' having been established as a historical 'good', it follows that 'immigration' must be a contemporary 'good'.

Only a bigot would disagree that history is gloriously progressive.
