  What you are probably talking about there BarryW is the American system which uses this method. Off the top of my head I dont know if they get greater turnouts in presidential elections than we do here in General Elections...I expect they do. But thats probably more because its a one to one personality clash which engages everybody by massive national television exposure, rather than due to the convention system which seems to be for the already converted.
  
  The whole thing costs a lot of money in the US. Here we are talking about reducing what elections cost not increasing it further, so while this Totnes experiment was interesting I suspect its honourable intentions will be destined for the scrapheap of once good ideas. I would be suspicious of donors funding the process.
