I think the BBC were quite right to give Griffin the same opportunity to spout his views as they are obliged to give to representatives of other parties. It is not their business to decide which political party should be allowed to speak and which should be banned.
In the event, he was less than impressive and sounded surprisingly gormless and uninformed for somebody with a Cambridge education. I have some sympathy with his view that he was the victim of a lynch mob as the panel and audience were unanimous in their scathing contempt and there seemed to be no attempt at any balance. Apparently there were eight BNP members in the audience but their contribution, if any, passed without notice.
The view has been expressed that any airtime given to the BNP, however counterproductive a show trial such as this might appear to be, gives them the oxygen of publicity. Hopefully the reverse might be the case. The warped ideas espoused by Griffin and his adherents might sound eminently reasonable to them when they are shut up together in a closed room and all bouncing the same extremist guff back and forth. They are exposed as trite shallow and insular when the door is opened and the oxygen of free thought flows in from the real world outside.
