Have just read this article on the Dover Ferry Photos Forum. It concerns a cancer patient whose radiation treatment set off radiation detectors in the Eastern Docks.

I think these must be the radiation detectors. They were installed a year or so ago close to the Terminal Control Building, at the foot of the overhead roadway over which all freight and tourist traffic passes on their way from the ferries to the dock exit. I might be wrong but I have it in mind that these are radiation detectors to pick up dirty bombs being brought into the country by terrorists.

All traffic just drives straight through the devices without stopping. If the detectors can generate an alarm for the radioactive isotope in a cancer patient then it augurs well for picking up the dirty bomb for which they are intended.
