12:178369Is it me or it is a stupid day to put an event on for voluntary groups, when a large number of people who do such work have full time jobs and spend evenings and weekends on group work ??

13:378372The problem is Paul that it's organised by civil servants who have an aversion to anything outside a Monday to Friday, 9 to 5 environment.
That's why the Dour clear ups don't take place at weekends when more people could help.

the marquees are taken down at the weekend.

12:348569I didn't say it wasn't important Sue,wasn't the last full council good and important,if I remember it was the Labour group who called the meeting as it was felt that 2 months between meetings was too long. Not only were we talking about the Credit Crunch and its affect on Dover and the staffing levels at DDC but there was no arguements. It was intresting to find out the circumstances of the £1 million in Iceland and we now have the full explanation of how and why the money was put into the Icelandic banks,
The rest of this meeting is about Seachange grant and intresting reading it is too £7.75m coming into the Town,if all goes smoothly and everyone signs up,of course not evryone is in favour because a lot of it will be spent in and on the Castle site and for the Cable Car plans.
On another subject it was interesting to hear that Dover Priory stage 2 is being held up as Network rail seem a little uncertain if they will cough up,but it now looks as if a new plan to spend £2m on additional car parking may help with the problem we have now and will have even more when the High Speed Link comes to Dover in a Year.
Just recieved a call from my Dad he is going on a Cruise with Fred Ol**n in Dec from Dover now F.O. normally arrange parking at the Western Docks free, but they want over £50 for a 7 night cruise.at prices like that go by Train.
If you knew what I know,we would both be in trouble!

23:588582Shouldn't do Howard
Stage 2 is all about tidying up the station approach etc.

07:198585Is stage two, also to waste money moving the traffic lights on the Folkestone Road a few feet, so they line up with the new steps being put in, sometimes I wonder if anyone of the designers of this project has any brains, why not put the new steps in line with existing lights, and include a ramp for disabled, that would also keep the guest house owners happy, as by moving these lights, will mean they will loose revenue, as it will take away their parking Bays, also the designers have no thought for the disabled, a disabled person will still have to go round the corner, to be able to cross the road, to cross at this point, is taking their life in their hands, they need eyes in the back of their heads as well as the front, they have to look for traffic coming from the station, traffic from Folkestone Road coming up from town and turning into staion, and traffic coming round corner from traffic coming down to station in the opposite direction

08:078589This kind of input was asked for at previous consultations Sheila, were you not able to put your view ?
I'm not trying to be obtuse Sheila, but why will it be so much more dangerous for disabled ? if they are in a wheelchair or electric buggy, they would still go round the corner (on the pavement ?) instead of going up the steps and they will still cross at a designated crossing - won't they ?
My understand was that the relocating of the crossing was not going to cause a loss of parking bays.

Yes I and many others put their views forward but as usual, the designers know best, moving the steps and lights, so that they are in line to make it easier for the pedestrian leaving or entering the station, what about the disabled, a ramp would have been as easy to put alongside the steps so that they had the same easiness of access, as regards the guest houses, you needed to talk with them, as it is, the Labour group, I included, have arranged for them to meet the appropriate people this month to put their greivencies forward, and hopefully put pressure on them to get this part altered to suit everyone
Sheila
PS I will let you take my buggy round the corner and you will see how difficult it can be, it is not easy

08:468594Totally agree with Sheila on this.
My mum is disabled to. and finds coming to Dover awful when it comes to negotiating pathways and shops.
Not enough is done to bring disabled access in Dover in line with other parts of the country. Does anyone know why this is????
Perhaps someone could enlighten us to what exactly is being done for disabled visitors and residents in Dover, to make things easier for them.

Pathways are one of the worst for disabled, if cars park on the kerb stones, a disabled user has to go in the road, another one is, you have a dropped kerb to get on the path, travel along the path, and when you get to the other end you cannot get of, as someone forgot to put a dropped kerb at that end, so out in the road you go again, getting a lot of abuse from drivers telling you (in no nice manner) to get back on the path where you belong. What I would like to say to these people, get in a disabled chair on mobility buggie and see the problems we have, and the motorists cause.
