--------
There are copies of bastardy papers citing William Ransley as the father of an illegitimate son of Mary Brett. William was to be apprehended and brought before justices to answer this charge on 5th July 1800. Of course, William was hanged in August 1800 so wouldn't be around to make the bastardy payments! The Brett family lived in Kingsford Street, Mersham, a very short way from Ransley House and seem to have been connected to the Ransleys.
At CKS at Maidstone there is a batch of papers known as the Brett-Ransley Papers.
