Rope Walk

  Can't remember who I spoke to, even if it was someone on here, but the subject of the Rope Walk came up
  
  Here is part of an old map showing the gun battery that is where the A20 goes past Avo, but also the rope walk that have Rope Walk it's name.
  
  Unlike the one at Chatham, this was a basic open air path with a small building at the end

  There are rope walks in every port there were sailing ships, many, if not all, covered over. It is part of the manufacture of ropes. There is a buggy pictured here that took over the actual walking...

  "The first stage of ropemaking was spinning. By combing the raw fibres helps to straighten them prior to spinning, this is known as 'hatchelling' and was carried out in the Hatchelling House. Next the hemp is spun into yarn by a spinner worker who walked the full length of the Ropehouse."

  There is a "ropewalk" in Sandwich, so I assume this is connected?
  Very good fishing spot, although I have not fished it for many years.
  It leads on to another stream, over the road, which is called the Butts.

  Interesting, I'd didn't realise there was a 'Ropery' in Dover or Sandwich come to think of it. I've known about the massive one in Chatham for years now. I didn't realise the significance that the term ropewalk meant that there was one in a town whenever the name is mentioned.

  barry w s,the ropewalk at chatham docks is well worth a visit,as is the rest of the dockyard.the good only thing about the ticket is that it lasts 12 months and you are to go as many times as you want.

  Will do, last time I was there it was a school visit in the distant past, mind you a ropery was state of the art in those days

  yep you tie yourself in knots there .and while your in the ropery look out for the chap hanging around in the rafters.
