  SCAM CALLS WARNING
  
  Dover District Council is warning householders to beware of scam callers following information that a resident received a bogus call about their Council Tax account.
  
  The Council has been informed that someone claiming to be from the Local Authority called a resident, stating that their Council Tax band had been reassessed, and saying they were entitled to a refund going back to 1990. The bogus caller said they needed the householder's bank details for the refund to be released. Dover District Council stresses that this is not the Council contacting customers.
  
  DDC has notified the Police, and local Neighbourhood Watch schemes and KCC Trading Standards have been informed. For more information, or if you have any concerns, please contact DDC on (01304) 872199.

  not that clever a scan paul, most people are fully aware that their council does not decide which tax band they are in.

  Indeed Howard but it is surprising the amount of people that can fall for these scams. We try to do our bit to make people aware.
  
  Recently I myself was called by a machine. yes a robot. It was the most interesting phonecall I had had for ages !! ....it all came from my bank, or I hope so. It was only afterwards that I thought ...jeez I hope that was genuine. Anyone else had one of those??

  Some time ago I had an unexpected cold call from my bank.
  
  I refused to answer any of their questions and reported the call on line. They phoned me the same evening to say the call was legitimate and have now noted in their files not to cold call me.

  I try to be neutral and polite but it is hard and getting even more difficult at times.

  quite right jan, i would have done the same.
  
  they should never cold call clients, they always tell us to be wary of people claiming to be them.

  HSBC have had the cheek to call me more than a few times and then ask me to confirm my security details, and get the hump when I point out that they called me, and could be anyone!!

  But then, in my personal opinion, HSBC are crap. For lots of reasons - and to stress, that is only my own, personal opinion based on personal experience over a number of years in a repeated pattern.

  Asking them for their date of birth, mother's maiden name and first and fourth numbers of their PIN usually annoys them enough to get them to curtail the call.....

  i much prefer the e mails from that nice nigerian prince that can only inherit his fortune if i send him large wads of used 50 quid notes.

  Bob - I did exactly that, and had an amusing quarter of an hour while theit humour bypass revealed itself. I think it was when I asked for their inside leg measurement that they finally twigged.........

  IMHO Braclays Bonk are far the worst of all the High Street Banks.
  
  As for calls to the home phone, I pleasantly inform them I will oblige with answers to their questions once they have passed my security checks. It never ceases to amaze me that we are supposed to be compliant and provide answers to their personal questions, but they don't seem to think we have the right to do the same. One caller accused me of being "difficult", which suprised me as I was expecting "racist" as that's the easier accusation to make.
