  I am not clear why life in prison is seen as a soft option. It's grim, endless and a life less lived. If somone is so dangerous that they cannot be allowed out (and I include paedophiles in this - I have worked as a professional with some in a previous life witin a secure setting and I am convinced that there is no, or little, capacity for change and that the risk of them living outside of prison is not a risk, on balance, worth taking for our children) then we should most definitely keep them incarcerated forever. Takin g a life is murder, whoever takes it, so the option - which is often less appealing remember - of life without hope of freedom seems a fitting and real punishment to me.
