As I do almost every day, I drove down to the Seasports Centre at lunchtime and turned right from Wellesley Road onto the Seafront; mostly because of yesterday's accident - and I understand that the rider is seriously injured but alive (thank God) - I paid extra attention to looking both ways twice before pulling out.
I have to say that the Seafront was very busy at that time, probably the lovely weather bringing extra people out, and that the narrowness of the road because of the 'front-on' parking makes that road very difficult to judge and the peripheral vision is not good. I have raised this before with Paul Watkins, who replied that the road conforms to Highways Agency regulations; I don't doubt that it does, but I truly believe that this road has become extremely dangerous as a result of the change in parking arrangements and I ask that these arrangements be reviewed as a result of this accident. I'm not at all surprised that this accident happened, just thankful that it isn't a fatal accident.
The road is in desperate need of resurfacing, which is a separate issue in itself, but I hope that DDC will review a decision I believe to have been borne out of greed, and repaint the parking bays 'side-on' to the promenade when the road is eventually resurfaced.
