    Esmeralda was hanged in the end and her body taken off to be laid deep in the bowels of a Parisian municipal building, there to be sealed-up and left in perpetuity.
    Many years afterwards the chamber was broached, when the building was to be demolished. A curious sight met the eyes of the workmen; the skeleton of a young woman was found entwined in an embrace from a much larger skeleton...one with a misshapen and hunch-forming spine.
