Super photo above of the Saga Sapphire. Bit of smoke adds to the action but may be consigned to history in years to come. Sulphur emissions in Sulphur Emission Control Areas (SECAs) such as the Dover Strait are due to be reduced to 0.1% under legislation requiring this to be done by 2015. Have just been involved in taking back pressure readings of the main engine exhausts for this project, the alternatives being examined are fitting exhaust scrubbers or converting to LNG.
Outside the SECAs, sulphur emissions will also have to be reduced. This legislation is being challenged by the world's shipping companies as the timetable is very short and cost is eye wateringly expensive. Total cost to world shipping is estimated in excess of $500 billion over the coming years.
