This would appear to be the first cruise ship to visit Dover, the Prinzessin Victoria Luise of Hamburg Amerika Line. She was the world's first purpose-built cruise ship and made her maiden voyage in 1901, calling at Dover in May 1904 to conduct a berthing trial on the Prince of Wales pier. She landed 75 first-class passengers and convinced the Germans that Dover would be a suitable port of call for their transatlantic liners. In 1906 she went aground in Jamaica and the Captain retreated to his cabin and shot himself. She was subsequently declared a total loss.
