  I think Paul's technical assistance might have come from Windows Movie Maker.
  
  Open WMM
  Add videos or photos/visual effects/edge detection
  Go to Home and click snapshot
  Save to file - then, in editing programme, resize if required and convert to Jpeg.
  Sorted. (Well, that's one way!)
