  Fair question Tom. The simple answer is no. The markings are painted onto a flat clearly visible surface and you can see from the shape of the stern that had the aftmost symbol been painted along the same horizontal as the more forward symbol, it would have been on the curve, rather than the flat, of the hull and possibly less visible to those that need to see it.
