Seafire Mk XVII
- 4 December 2011 15:55140907This is the last of my quick 1:48 scale builds. I have depicted an aircraft from No 1832 Naval Air Squadron, RNVR, based in Culham 1950. The Seafire is a navalised version of the Spitfire that flew off carriers.
Quite pleased with the build.
I will now be moving on to the larger 1:32 scale kits, I have 10 in my stash to build. These will take a lot longer and have a lot of extra detail. The first one I build will be a P40 Tomahawk of 112 Squadron RAF, Egypt 1942.
Someone asked about size... to put that into perspective here is a pic of the Seafire with a 6 inch ruler
The Seafire and Spitfire, in real life, are about the same size as the P40, both single engined fighters. Just to show how much bigger the next batch of kits I am building are here is the Seafire (1:48 scale - 1 inch on model is 4 feet), alongside the lower wing piece of the P40 which is 1:32 scale.
Finally - here they are, to show how the Spitfire changed over the years. The Mk1 from 1940 alongside a Seafire Mk XVII from 1950...

- 4 December 2011 18:16140918Here is the box lid of the P40 Tomahawk I am building next. Some of you may not be familiar with this important but not glamorous fighter.
The box illustration shows a RAAF Mk 3 while I am building a different version, RAF Mk 1. There are quite a few differences between the two marks including a shorter fuselage for the Mk1 but the kit includes all the parts.

I have my 4 smaller 1:48 scale kits on the shelf next to me in the office. This will not work for the bigger kits though...
I am planning to buy some Ikea Detolf units to display them in my back-office. I have room for 2 or 3 and each unit will have space for 5 models so even that is limited!
Fortunately I do have a 5 storey town house for just my son and I, so I expect I will be able to find more display space elsewhere!!!
These bigger kits take a lot longer to build. The cockpit of one of my kits has over 180 pieces let alone the rest of the model.... The 10 kits I have stashed ready will be about 2 years work I reckon, so I have time to solve the storage and display problem. Mind you, one of the kits a JU88 has a wingspan of over 22 inches so it will take up a lot of room and will have to fit on top of a Detolf unit, it certainly will not go inside... - Ross Miller
