Hi Paul
Sorry not posted before but have had computer away being "updated" so catching up on events of the last few days
Yes as reported the Dover Society is attempting to "help" with the state of the town. In effect it will , I hope, not just be another "talking shop" but a genuine "action group".
It is not only the state of buildings that requires DDC support for section 215 (Much has already been said re this) which can only be achieved if the council genuinely has a sincere will to succeed with its implementation. It is interesting that some of the offending buildings are either in a Conservation Area or may be listed buildings.
Of concern to many Dover Society members is the street scene including litter control as well as planting also anti-social behaviour
The Dover Society has contributed much to the town over recent years. For forumites the trees in containers in Biggin Street/Market Square was a Dover Society initiative with over £2k being raised by members and supported by Dover Town Council. DDC took the responsibility of maintaining however there are now 4 trees missing (three vandalised, one died) and DDC have shown no interest in replacing or indeed anyone attempting to trace from CTV footage the guilty culprits. I see in this weeks "Express" an incident in Pencester with an anti-social cyclist that seems not to have been picked up on CCTV.
I have posted much in respect of litter including cigarette ends and chewing gum and currently I am awaiting details of exactly how some other towns/cities have solved this with a more robust approach.
Currently the Dover Society is seeking volunteers from its membership (non members would also be welcome) to form a task force to periodically concentrate on any reported "grot spots". This is not in anyway replacing the statuatory requirements of the Council to provide street cleaning etc but to attempt "involvement" to generate pride in our town.We have members on the Sub-Committee who are already involved with the cleaning of the River Dour as well as Cowgate Cemetary.
Our Worshipal Mayor has quite correctly indicated that too few people are showing interest in the town. There is need for a greater sense of community involvement to overcome some of the problems and in this connection it is hoped that the Dover Society and its members can do its share for the town.
