UPDATE FROM DTC:
WAR MEMORIAL GARDENS
Thank you very much for contacting the Town Council with your views concerning a proposal put forward by the Events Committee of the Town Council. Your views are most welcome and helpful.
For your information, among the Town Council's specific aims, one is to be forward-looking and a second is to ensure transparency of decision-making, by communicating and consulting with our townsfolk, on all important issues. This explains why we have started this consultation process concerning possible future plans.
However, such has been the initial negative response that I can confirm that, at the full Town Council meeting on the 25 March 2009, I withdrew the suggestion, requesting the Town Council not to proceed any further with this conceptual proposal, thus enabling the matter to be re-addressed by my Committee in due course.
I would wish to stress that Dover Town Council takes its responsibilities extremely seriously concerning the general concept of Remembrance and our War Memorial and gardens. This is witnessed by the Council's support for the first phase of the Dover War Memorial Project itself. Further you will have seen the efforts we make to support the Royal British Legion for the Poppy Appeal and for Remembrance Sunday itself. Shortly, we will be organising the annual commemoration of the Zeebrugge Raid to be held on the 23rd April 2009, and to which you would be most welcome.
On a personal note, I would also add that one of my relatives is named on the War Memorial. Accordingly, both personally and as a Councillor, you will appreciate that under no circumstances would we wish to negatively affect our homage to the fallen.
Accordingly, I repeat that the matter has been withdrawn from consideration. Thank you again for your help and opinion.
Yours sincerely
Councillor Mrs V Philpott
Chairman - Events Committee
