Seeing that docks are in the vogue-here's the historic dry dock near Middlesbrough on the River Tees where we hope to install TSS Dover for the first part of her restoration. Smith's no. 4 dock has been out of use for some years-it needs work to its gates and it's pumps need attention. We are discussing possibilities with the owners, PD ports who see our project as a practical solution to the problem of 'our' stricken vessel which lies about 1 mile upstream. Also it could give Teesside another working dry dock (there are only 2 others which are fully operational). Obviously, funding is the key and we're working on it. Fortunately we now have a Teesside rep- it's nonetheless all very tough going, but we are moving forward. The following pics will give you an idea what we're dealing with.
Also in the following video-in the opening sequence top right is Middlesbrough Football Stadium, adjacent to which 'Dover' is located. Smith's no. 4 dock is the furthest one away, then to the right as the camera pans.
We used to dry dock at Smith's Dock, South Bank when I was with Townsends, later P&O Richard. I was on FE V and European Trader. They also built some fine ships there many years ago. I had a look on Google Earth, it looks derelict now.
I wish you all the luck in the world in your venture.
Thanks Alec-you are quite right about the dereliction and we are aware that vessels from the Dover Straits Service were once frequent visitors to the Smith's Dry Docks. We intend that our proposed apprenticeship scheme will make a difference.
There's usually funding for jobs involving apprenticeships Richard. From working at the LSBC, I know a chap whose job is to seek (mostly large-scale) funding for community groups such as yours; there is no up front charge, his money comes out of your award.
If you'd like his details let me know.
K College in Dover are heavily into (or about to be) apprenticeships, maybe some way in there ? and Viking Recruitment are starting on a bigger role for maritime recruitment and jobs/apprenticeships. All of these are dependant on funding and apprenticeships get the best funding.
Yes indeed Roger-thanks for that, I will be in touch re your contact. We have already held preliminary discussions with K College and are about to start working with them. We are aware of Viking and I believe they are aware of us-these are early days-I'm sure there are many possibilities.
