19:4927707interesting to hear the outgoing(in more ways than one) honourable member for maidstone criticize her leader for
giving priority to female and ethnic minority candidates.
is boy dave the last bastion of political correctness?

22:2427713No, not really. He has not imposed all ethnic or all woman shortlists. All he has done is to make sure that candidates who have previously been overlooked get a shot at selection. He has been successful in that. I speak as one who detests political correctness and so called positive discrimination.

07:1627721All selections (for any job) should be made on merit - pure and simple.

08:1927730that must be the only criteria.
i feel certain that anyone of an ethnic minority wants to be judged on their ability rather than be patronised.

08:2927731Well well now what is this all about?
As one who opposed the Labour party locally when they attempted it.
All I will say is that it is fine if everyone looks at a candidate not on there gender but on ability.
Sadly we still are in a society when some men still look down on women as inferior
It took KCC some time to change, and there still are signs of it!!!!
So whilst I support ROGER thats in the perfect world, sadly we are not, so have to consider sometimes people will look at candidates at vote against them just because of there gender/colour.
As I say whilst on the KCC the local KCC Labour party attempted to bring in the same obviously there were large fall outs!!
Like ROGER i look at a persons ability, ie can they do the job?
Some of the arguments put forward were amusing if they were not so serious.
I heard one chap say "my wife should get the job cos shes the best for job?" that was very questionable in itself,(and i did)!
Im afraid as i have told the Labour party I will NEVER support women only shortlists
and at election before last spent a lot of my time argueing with leading lights of the party on this.
To me its all about ability, If you have the ability I will vote for you.
Cor glad im out of all of that now!!!!
Wonder why DC has decided on that route, think hes probably making a mistake if he over plays it

08:4327735What route, exactly, has DC decided on Keith? No all women shortlists, no all ethnic shortlists, even the 'A' List has been abandoned because as it turned out it was not really needed though initially it did give a boost to some. All Conservative candidates have been selected on merit and not by positive discrimination.
What DC has done is work to get more women and ethnics as approved candidates and has succeeded in doing that and as a result we have a lot more of these in winnable seats, a lot more. All selected on merit.
The biggest obstacle in the Conservative Party for women candidates is, and always has been, the Conservative ladies on the selection panels themselves and not the men.

09:0927746Exactly what Keith? Most of what I have said is on public record and perfectly factual. As for my last comment, it is well known in Conservative circles and I have had first hand experience.

09:2027752I believe you BarryW, after all, DC employs that many people himself, he must know what he's talking about, mustn't he?
