19:116698I noticed today that Somerfield have submitted an application to vary their alcohol licence to allow them to sell alcohol from 7 in the morning.
If like me you think that this only does one thing - allow the street drinkers to start even earlier then you can object by following this link:
http://www.secure.dover.gov.uk/MVM/O..._Criteria.aspx
you need to select Castle Street Dover as the street and then select Somerfield's pending application - you then get a form to complete to register your complaint (or support?)

21:096700Surely this can only be to supply the vagrants that use the bandstand as their "bedroom".
What are Somerfield up to? More to the point, where do the "street drinkers" get their money from?

21:116701somerfield are a responsible retailer, i have seen them refuse to serve many people that have appeared to be inebriated.
there would be two main reasons that they would apply for an early licence.
a) all their rivals have.
b) a lot of dock and ferry workers finish their long shifts early morning, to them it is evening and they would like a beer to unwind.

i can assure you that bandstand drinkers are not served at somerfield, one of the culprits is an "offy" quite close to you.

00:106707Howard, I fully agree with you. I have been in Somerfields many times and have often seen the problems they have in dealing with the inebriated, shoplifting, out for trouble fraternity. Never have I seen them serving such people. In my experience the staff there are always friendly and helpful, I realise others may have different opinions but I can only go by what I have seen. With Tesco's being 24/6 1/2 it is obvious that they have to compete, and with the threat of Asda's they have to stay ahead of the game.
Politics, it seems to me, for years, or all too long, has been concerned with right or left instead of right or wrong.

08:356716I agree with Howard, its not the super markets that are the problem, its the small newsagents/offies selling cheap booze. But getting back to the point,I fail to see why anyone should want to buy alcohol at seven in the morning.Nice to see though, that the so called bandstand drinkers have disappeared from Pencester, just a shame they have found a new patch down the seafront, still D.H.B.will probably do nothing about their antics.

i had a neighbour a while back that finished his week on board at 7 am along with a load of others.
none had touched a drink for a week.
the first thing they did was look for a place to buy some cans of the amber nectar and go back to someones place
for a 2 hour session before passing out and cathing up with missed sleep.
don't forget that 5, 6 or even 7 in the morning can be someone else's evening in our town.
