Some boyhood memories for Vic and Terry!
The steam lorry is actually a Sentinel S4 built in 1934. They were quite advanced and could reach speeds of 50mph on the flat!
I mentioned 1954 as the bull nosed Morris is a bit of a red herring! The S4 pictured is about 1 year away from retirement and was one of a fleet owned by Wingham Engineering and leased to Fremlins for dray purposes. It was one of 2 survivors into preservation. It was purchased from 'Wingham' in 1956 by my grandfather Fred Pegden of Pegden Bros, Elham who intended to use it for snowploughing and general haulage duties. However with the advent of the Suez Fuel Crisis in 1956/57 he hired it back to Fremlins who were doing their bit to counter the the international fuel shortage.
It appeared at the annual Elham Steam Rally and was used to great effect, fitted with a monster snowplough, in keeping the Elham Valley Road open between the A20 at Beechborough and the A2 at Bishopsbourne during the 1962/63 white out. Only trouble was at the height of the storm the A20 & A2 were both blocked for several days at each junction-probably because they were using diesels on that part of the job!
Picture below was taken on the 5th Dec 1956 in Fremlins yard at Faversham. Much to my grandfather's annoyance he painted out the Fremlins signage only the week before he had the request!
