11:1330355I heard on the local radio ,today, that local church volunteers will be on the streets of St Helier in the late evening offering help and advice to any youngsters that appear to be the worse for wear.
They will be carrying free bottles of water for the dehydrated, wipes for those that may have over indulged and spoiled their clothing, flip flops for any girl in 'footwear distress' ie broken heel or lost shoes plus a lift home if needed or where possible.
Their mandate is not to preach or convert these kids to Christianity but merely put their strong beliefs and faith into action by helping others. A number of organisations and different churches are involved.
It's certainly a new and different approach to the problem of young binge drinkers and if it saves one young girls or boys life then it certainly would have been worth it.
It sounds quite laudable but could it work on the streets of Dover?.

16:5730369Marek thats an interesting idea, but I suspect Jersey probably still has some cling to the old ways and the old days. Part of the successes of island paradises is that they are a little bit behind modern society where they still think such an option might work, and in fact it might indeed work there, at least up to a point. Yes it might work there as the horse may be still in the stable. Here in mainland England however said horse has already bolted to the foothills of crime without punishment, or very little punishment.
The church's role has diminished as we see everyday, so I dont know if they even have the manpower to mount such a push anymore, never mind the will ...as Im sure they are only too aware of the possibility that too much abuse would be heaped on their good intentions any old saturday night, in any old town.

17:0030371this sort of thing goes on around the country, christian groups help sober youngsters up and assist them to get home safely.
a good example of christianity still finding a place in today's society.
