was up there yesterday and admiring the work on the new visitors centre.will look great.
i remember the money coming from central governement and english heritage grabbing the money very quickly.
all very good, i thought at the time.
yesterday i noticed a sign that said the money came from the regeneration of coastal towns fund????
how did they get the money?
surely this should have gone to to the town or district council, not an organisation that seems to have no connection with the town.
we all know that the money would have been desperately required here, not at a site that points people away from dover.
how did we miss out on getting first bash at the dosh?
the london road community forum is spending its own funds on making properties look attractive, roger is paying out of his pocket to produce literature to bring people in, apologies to those i have ommitted to mention.

They got the money as they were part of the pitch that was made by Dover for the money - the town has not seen any money as I believe it needs to be match funded and we either can't or won't release the funds or don't have it, plus the DDC cannot agree on what to spend the money on

You have got the bidding process wrong folks.
The government department DCMS has a fund called Seachange which is supposed to link Heritage sites with town centres to offer regeneration.
The Dover bid by was submitted by KCC the transport authority with support by DDC and SEEDA. They lead the local authority element of the bid.
Effectively this is part of the Cable car project and is completing two phases, feasibility [[succesfully done with positive recommendations]and now the Master Planning element of Dover's Waterside project with DHB. These include changes to promenade [upgrade ]and also renewal of the Bleriot memorial[on site]. SEEDA are funding the development of the Waterside Project with DHB. This is bubbling away nicely in the background.
The EH element of the project was more easily implemented as you have now seen.
It is a capital only project fund and can't be used for routine tourism projects [DCMA Rules]. It is overseen by CABE who judge, recommend and release the funds in completed phases.

so they are sponcering out of town projects, rather than in town projects.the town does need money spent on it more so than out of town ones.

I don't regard the Dover Martime development out of town or connecting the town to the Castle for visitors [to and fro] out of Town. The two need to co-exist and feed off each other.
The ST James development , Maritime development, Big Screen are meant to add to Dover's regeneration. Think and act small and you get small.
Nothing is shelved even in these difficult recessionary times.
You will probably have seen the articles in the Dover Express and Mercury relating to a Dover Summit hosted by a government minister. Work is progressing even if slower than we would like.

You might want to look at
www.seachangedover.co.uk I think the website spells it out more adequately than I have described.

Have you have to realise if you spell every acronym out at a council meeting, you will get nowhere !!
DCMS is the Department of Culture Media and Sport and CABE I think is something to do with the campaign for built environment.
Been nice knowing you :)

Sorry Howard. I sometimes don't know what they mean, other than they give money or get in the way, invariably the latter.
Thanks Paul.

I fail to see how building a cable car from the western docks to the castle in any way constitutes connecting the town to the castle.
Frankly, all this will do is bypass the town again, continuing the perception that DHB in particular view the town as an inconvenience at best and irrelevant at worst

thanks to ross and the boss for explaining the initials.
so many organisations involved, it is not surprising that change takes so long.
do other western countries have all these layers of bureaucracy?
moving on, the castle, sea front and town do need to be linked up so that each benefits from the other.
my original underatnding that there would be a cable car station in market square, people tell me that this is not now the case.

Present location is around the De Bradelei area and next to the proposed Land bridge connecting the Maritime Development with the Bench St /Market Sq.area.

in that case it will be a positive project.
people were telling me that it would go straight from the cruise terminal to the castle, which would have been disastrous for the town.
the cruise passengers that would not go to the castle, would get the impression that the town was a dangerous place.
