All week the statue has been covered, with experts doing their expert cleaning piece by piece. Today I strolled by the statue and took a number of pictures.. this is one..note where once it was completely green with oxidization and whatnhaveyou, now it has been returned to its magnificent bronze. And all ready for the bigtime celebrations to come. First man to fly the channel both ways... in 1902 I think. Or gosh..was it 1910 ermm ??

As the Wright Brothers flew in 1903 and 'invented' powered manned flight, I think we can discount the 1902 date Paul! Statue looks really good.

Ah indeed youre right Phil..dem Wright Bros will get in the way of a good story. But have since looked it up... June 02 1910 was the day of the two direction non stop flight across the channel. I read this on the statue this morning but forgot by the time I got home, need to write these things down nowadays but I knew there was a 2 in it somewhere.
He died the same year while taking part in an air display..and was only 32. He was also known to dabble in motor engines with a guy called Royce.

Should be a great week-end with all those old Roll's along the seafront.

Yes will be Roger and with bags of great photo opportunities I would expect. Dont know how long it will last as is Vic but the statue will go green again in time. Lets hope it manages to steer clear of bird assault until the big day is over at least. Otherwise someone better get down there with a bucket and sponge before the big day. The new makeover really worked, it looks great.

Lovely job PaulB, but I`d have thought in this modern day of cleaning technology, with all the chemicals about, that there would be something to clean and protect it for a few years at least.
Tell them that I came, and no one answered.

Great to see the camparison before and after photos. Pity it didn't receive any attention for so long.
Love to see some fountains there Keith, but I'm sure ther'e no chance; money's tight - for everyone, so I can't see enough being available for a fountain of any description.
Those people who park along the seafront overnight, would be doing their washing in them and taking water to make their tea.

ROGER
I don't share your view, there were coloured light fountains before, and brought in people to watch them.
was lovely in the evenings.
sure would help tourism
Never had the problems you highlight before roger

They would be an attraction it's true and would probably bring visitors in to see them, but the initial capital outlay to have the fountain(s) installed would be very high and the maintenance wouldn't be cheap either.
It was kinda tongue in cheek about people doing their washing in them - bu I'm sure you knew that Keith.

Aren't the Seachange plans for the seafront to have some sort of colour illumination lights ?
