Saw this today at recently cleared site of the old Crypt tavern in Bench st.Some sort of statue, not sure if it was a feature of the restaurant when it was open or it's just recently been dug up,there was no one around on site to ask.Boarding has just been put up all around the site with a couple of viewing points.Unfortunately it was the best picture I could get.Anyone know anything about it?

Don't forget "The Crypt" has nothing to do with crypts ! It is a 1920s bodge up by Barwicks of a medieval cellar/undercroft taking its name from the "crypt" on the opposite side of the road which also wasn't a crypt and was also a medieval cellar !

Thanks for the above reminder DHP.
The Crypt has many happy memories for me as well as the sad one when it burnt down.

I can't make out much of the bust's detail, but it sure reminds me of something...

Similar sort of pose but i wonder who the bust is actually supposed to be and as Vic says he thought it was on the outside wall.I cant see it on old pictures of the front of the restuarant so did it come from inside or has it come from elsewhere?Maybe it has nothing to do with the Crypt at all.Would be interesting to know.

The site has been extensively dug before and was previously deep in rubbish so likely something dumped there, and if it was anything historically important then they would unlikely just leave it out in the elements

It was a nice place in its time amongst many others around the area, don't think any locals will forget that tragic evening
