My un-informed opinion has, for a number of years, been that we should either go the whole hog with Europe (all the way in) or pull right out as Brian Dixon suggests. Any sort of a compromise with the EU as it is now constituted just doesn't sit comfortably with me at all.
I don't understand Keith's economics of pulling out. Why would it cost the UK anything to pull out? Surely we would be saving the millions of pounds we pay into the EU every year and then have to fight tooth and nail to get just a little of it back? To simplify things in the way BarryW did earlier and put it into a domestic context; if I leave a club to which I pay an annual subscription then I can put the money to a different use, say to paying off any debts I may have. I just cannot see what benefit belong to the EU club has for this country.
Howard: "Just-in-Time" is indeed the name of the delivery game these days. In many cases a delay of even a few hours can bring a production line to a grinding halt (why do you think truckers get so frustrated with Op. Stack?). A manufacturer's warehouse is on the road! And don't even think about arriving early for a delivery - they won't have the storage capacity to take your load ahead of time either and you'll just have to sit outside the depot until your delivery time.
