The Ellie's rat problem

- 13 October 2009 16:0030362The problem of the rat infestation must have been apparent for some time as their droppings and gnawings are easily spotted even by those who know nothing about them.
Staff should be trained in hygiene and the storage and disposal of food, sadly many are not or simply don't bother.
Rats are notorious for urinating wherever they go and it always made me cringe to go into other pubs and see people drinking straight out of the bottle, bottles that had been transported from the manufacturer to the brewery and from the brewery to the pub, I often wondered how many rats had p....d on that bottle before its contents were consumed. Needless to say I would not allow this practise and every customer had to have the contents of the bottle poured in to a glass.
In conclusion for the Council to apply to the Court for a closure order the infestation must have been extremely serious and a likely risk to public health. - 13 October 2009 16:4630367Gawd all sounds pretty grim. The modern habit of drinking out of bottles looks a bit of a no-no there Dave...wont consider that option in future. Ive only been in the Ellie once and I went there with that notorious duo Keef and Howard...that was risky. Not the pub, but Keef and Howard !lol?
The Council have been active lately with regard to pubs as there have been one or two other problems which were well documented, so that must be a good thing. Good for the punters and in the long term good for all pubs as confidence can be assured. It is especially tricky where there is food on the menu, and many pubs are doing food now in an effort to survive.
I wonder if its the river running through the centre of town that causes some of these problems with rats. the usual signs advertising grub were missing.
whatever they do to rectify the problem, it will take time to get all the customers back. - 14 October 2009 06:4930420I heard that the problem was caused by the residents of the flats above the Ellie - throwing their food waste out of the window; I don't know if that is the case of course, but it certainly would encourage rats and upset (an understatement) the owner/manager of the Ellie.
Roger - 14 October 2009 10:1030440Talking of Rats, a couple of days ago, our cat Oliver brought me a pressie of a huge Rat and left it on the doorstep, now I, like lots of people I know can't stand the things and feel physically sick just seeing them. I was at my wits end, how was I going to get rid of it but along came my knight in shining armour Mr Fox who casually looked up at me at the window, picked it up and went along his merry way. Result

14 October 2009 23:4430495The alleyway at the side of the Ellie, Gaol Lane, where the cinema stands used to be a disgrace when I walked to and from my work years ago. There was food strewn everywhere from the black bags put out by the Cafe/restaurant on the corner. I am not surprised there are rats about if black bags are still being used. - 15 October 2009 07:0230503If any business is going to generate food waste, then proper commercial bins should be provided.
