18:1510050On the 17th December the George Cross for Dover Campaign has called a meeting of the various groups and societies concerned with Dover's wonderful history. This meeting, to be held in the Town Council offices from 10:00am, aims to produce a united statement on those sites in Dover that we all feel should be preserved, protected and promoted. Once completed we will be presenting this document to both DDC and DTC (and Dover Pride) as well as releasing it the press and forums for public comment. We have invited The Western Heights Preservation Society, The Dover Society, The Dover War Memorial Project and the Roman Painted House, as well as having heard from Doverpast but if there are any groups etc that you know of or represent that you feel should also be there please do reply here, contact me directly or leave a message on our website
http://www.thegeorgecrossfordover.org.uk. Thank you in advance for your support.
Politics, it seems to me, for years, or all too long, has been concerned with right or left instead of right or wrong.

18:3010054Without wishing to cause major upset but can somebody tell me why Dover is justfied in receiving a George Cross where others who were far more severely bombed do not seek anything.

18:4010060WCCTA - White Cliffs Country Tourism Association could also be invited.
Do you believe then Chris that our heritage is being ignored ?
What is the aim of this initiative (I'm not picking fault here) ? we all know what we have, but many of the sites are owned by different bodies and as such, they have their own agendas.
DDC don't have any money to spend on any of them; English Heritage are going to spend millions on the Castle (be great if they spent some of that on the Drop-Redoubt); The Roman Painted House don't have any money, nor does the Museum, Crabble Corn Mill or any of the others.
A Tourism Stratagy would help with the promotion and increase visitor numbers and of course income for them.

23:3810078Part of the idea Roger. I do think that the diversity of our heritage gets left out in favour of the castle, which has the visitor numbers and thus income. One aim is to produce a document, to be made available, that will actually state what those living in Dover and actively seeking to preserve and promote the town would like to see, rather than just outside studies. Once produced it is our hope that it will be a starting point for other initiatives.

07:3010086Doesn't that paper I sent you a few weeks ago, do that ? - show off what we have here.
If we're not careful, we'll have too many splinter groups of local concerned people, but no overall strategy. Surely what we need is a focused tourism strategy and body that different organisations feed into.
Good Luck tho'.

13:4210109The idea here is to get all the splinters together and, with all the talk of regeneration going on, state what ALL the various groups would like to see done as a way forward from the point of view of those who are actively concerned with Dover's past and its place in Dover's future.

20:1610144a good point made by roger there, the whole thing has to come under one umbrella to be effective.
i do not see much from the tourism department.
if we are all honest, our victor's escapades have done more for the profile of the town than everything else put together in recent years.
national coverage over a few days, without costing us a penny.
